Offering more light, space, air flow and curb appeal, dormers provide a wealth of value as an addition to a home. From the inside, a dormer can unleash a world of possibilities for a home’s upper floor, from new bedrooms to bathroom additions or office workspaces. From the outside, a dormer can improve a home’s visual appeal, offering changes to the rhythmic pattern of the home’s exterior design while maintaining its overall look and feel.
The expert contractors and roofers at J&J Contracting LLC can help you realize your dream of having a more comfortable and usable upper floor by helping you add a dormer to your Wisconsin home. A dormer is an expansion of the top floor of a home that projects from the slope of the roof that includes a window to let in more natural light and air flow. Depending on the type, a dormer can increase the amount of usable space in a home’s top floor, offering additional headroom which allows freer movement in the top floor of slant-roofed houses.
With J&J Contractors the choice is yours as to which type of dormer you’d like added to your home. There are three main types of dormers that are most commonly constructed:
The most basic type, and also the most common to have been included in a home’s initial build. These are smaller dormers typically containing a single smaller window that sits beneath a triangular gabled roof that projects from the roof’s main slope. They can provide additional natural light into a top-floor room as well as added air flow. These dormers feel right at home when combined with colonial, tudor, craftsman style homes, among others.
A larger style of dormer that includes a single sloping roof projecting at a different pitch out from the original roof. These dormers lend themselves well to adding a large amount of livable space to an upper floor room, and are capable of turning half baths into full baths and a smaller room into a master suite. While perhaps less visually striking than other dormer types, they maximize interior space for top-floor rooms. These larger structures require more unused roof space and are a good fit in craftsman style houses, dutch colonials, and particularly the bungalow style that is so common in Milwaukee.
Hip dormers are usually larger than gable-fronted dormers, but smaller than shed styles. Unlike the gable style, it has three sloping planes, as if the front-facing peak of the gabled dormer has been cut down. Instead the front peak will closely match the slope of the original roofline. These are sturdy and catch less of the wind than gables, but don’t provide the raw square footage that a shed dormer will. They are common additions to homes with prairie-style architecture, french styles, and once again are commonly seen in Milwaukee’s famous bungalow style homes.
